Uusi kappale/New song: You can’t fix a broken heart
November 21st, 2010Olen tässä nyt työstänyt useampaakin uutta kappaletta, tämä kuitenkin alkoi muotoutua päässäni vasta eilen, ja tänään sain sen sitten jo kokonaan kasaan. Kappale on oikeastaan jatkoa toisella uudella kappaleelle, I think I broke something, joka tosin on vielä vaiheessa.
You can’t fix a broken heart -kappale ehkä sulavimmin uppoaa kategoriaan dark ambient, vaikka siinä hieman rytmejä onkin mukana. Kappale on myös ensimmäinen jonka olen kokonaan työstänyt Logic Studio:lla, midi-kontrollerina iPad TouchOS:n kera. Niin ikään kappaleeseen on päätynyt ensi kertaa minun omaa kitaransoittoa sitten vuoden 1995, jolloin Rosewater-yhtyeellä osallistuimme Paskin bändi skabaan (emme sijoittuneet…

I have recently worked on couple of new songs, but idea for this song came just yesterday, and I already finished it today. Song is sort of a sequal to another new song, I think I broke something, that I am still working on. This one and all the other songs that I am currently working on, are part of album or ep, called Mielenmyrsky. Mielenmyrsky is concept album or ep, or whatever comes out of it, that is based on science fiction book with same name.
You can’t fix a broken heart will probably best fit to category dark ambient, even it has some rhytms. This is first song, I have produced using Logic Studio with iPad+TouchOS as midi-controller. This is also first time I have recorded my own guitar playing since 1995, when we made demo-tape for Worst band-competition using name Rosewater. And no, we didn’t qualify.
Maschinen fest 2010
November 19th, 2010un-edited notes from Maschinen fest 2010. I might clean or re-write this entry later.
I started my Maschinen fest trip by flying in Finnair business class. Free booze! Well, I didn’t drink that much, as I have been slight depressed lately, and at least for me, booze and depression doesn’t exactly work that great together. But I had few, just not enough to get drunk.
Trains at Düsseldorf airport trainstation was in chaos, my first train was cancelled, other’s were 10 minutes late. But in the end I got into train, and evently in to Oberhausen.
Oberhausen city center is totally dead now. There is huge shopping center at Neu Mitte, and it has pretty much killed all the business and life in city center. Anyway, I got my hotel room, and got some groceries.
Because I decided to for Hemi at hotel, I/we missed first three bands, which would have been Mandelbrot, 13th monkey and Matta. But we shared bottle of sparkling wine.
Chrysalide I saw at WGT this year, and saw them again. They have listened to their Skinny puppy. Okayish show from them. Somewhere around here we met another finn Petteri, who came from Lyon, France.
I only watched couple of songs from Bipol, nothing wrong there, I just wasn’t in the mood. Config.sys I saw couple of years ago, they were OK then, and they were OK now.
Ambassador21, well it is sort of cheap version of Atari Teenage Riot. Nothing wrong with that. I watched most of their show. That chick is pretty hot, even I am not usually into blonds. Then again, it is more about her stage act and attitude, that makes her hot.
I loved Asche, it has been, I think, 10 years since I saw really Asche show. He played few songs at Maschinen fest two years ago, right? Somewhere between Morgenstern, and others? Great show. We decided to skip Sonar. Seen it so many times.
Saturday. We decided to take a look, that Neu Mitte thingy. Whole Neu Mitte is just huge shopping center. Absolutely nothing out of ordinary there. We (all three finns) had coffee there. And we had our “Kaurismäki” moment at coffee.
Little nap at hotel, and back to Neu mitte for food; traditional Maschinen fest saturday meal; Tex mex. It took some time to get our foods. And again we missed couple of bands.
I saw couple of songs from ABS6, which was OK. The we saw most of the Subheim, which was also OK. Althought it took couple of songs for man behind the mixing deck to get sounds OK. I sort of liked it.
Edgey was what is, basic rhytmic noise, I think I took couple of dance steps, not that many.
Iszoloscope, was great. And I liked Ah Cama-sotz also. Especially I liked that psy-trance styled song they ended their show.
And then came Winterkälte. And they fucking rule! I think they rule even more than famous chapter four. I danced most of their show. Afterwards I was sweatty, and tired, but also slight happy, well, not, happy-happy, but I sort of felt good, for a little while.
Unfortunately, I lost my precious ring, Roosa, I had her for 12 years. And I also lost my named pen.
Sunday, Hemi left for Amsterdam. As I didn’t have anything better to-do I just got myself pizza and headed for Turbinenhalleat around four, when first band was supposed to start.
They started at around 20 to five. Band was called Horque, and I got impression, that it was kind of humoristic rhytmic noise. But because of my limited german vocabulary, I missed most of the “lyrics”, so it really didn’t work for me at all.
Next was Killer, which was more of an performance, than live. There was guy in metallic mask sitting front of a television, and making some noise. It didn’t work for me either.
And straight to Lingouf, who started more like an IDM, but pretty soon it changed to generic rhytmic noise, with too little variations on beats, to keep me interrested.
At around this point, I met Petteri again.
FRL Linientreu, was, well, OK? Not very memorable, I guess, it has been only 7 hours since the show, and I can hardly remember what it was like.
Niveau Zero somehow reminded me of french “gansta”rap, even there wasn’t any rap involved. I think there was same kind of aggression, but in form of noise. Very deep bass drums.
Sonic area, well, I saw, but at this point I was little tired, so I couldn’t really focus on it enough.
Nullvektor woke me up again, or was it Sinalco cola? I saw Nullvektor just recently, and it was pretty much the same. It is rhytmic noise, more focused on rhytmic part. If you get yourself into dance mood, then it works. I danced some.
Mono No Aware was next, and as always, Leif really knows how to do it. Perfect rhytmic noise to dance to, but it is also pleasure to watch Leif work. You know, those laptop artists, they just push one button, and computer does everything, sure.
And last, but definitely not least, Architect. IDM/noise/breacore project by Daniel Meyer, who is better known from EBM projects he has been involved such as Haujobb, Clean and lately Covenant. Architect is something complete different. This was my first full Architect show. There was very nice flow going on, first some IDM, then introduce more noise, and then drop those IDM beats, then add some more and faster broken beats to turn it into breakcore. And this flow continued from song to song, and through whole set. And in the end we saw something very rare, encore, and another and third one as well.
Un-official theme at after party seemed to be Gabber this year. I was very tired and not in the mood for gabber (or to party), so I left early. But I was long enough to see people again dancing at the tables. It happens everytime.

edit: fatal bug in imageMagick was tracked to actually being in ghostscript, which imageMagick was also using, and ghostscript was fixed. One of these days FreeBSD ports collection will implode because of all necessary and especially un-necessary cross-dependencies between applications…
About shows and travelling
October 24th, 2010This week I travelled to Tampere to see Einstürzende Neubauten on their 3 decades tour. Twice, as all these 3 decades shows are split to two days, one as Einstürzende Neubauten show, and another title as “Evening with Einstürzende Neubauten”. “Evening with…” varies between cities, but it will always include some video footage from 3 decades of Neubauten, shorter Einstürzende Neubauten show, and two other bands/shows/spoken word thingies.
So, Wednesday was “Evening with Einstürzende Neubauten” evening, and it included: 30 minute set from Neubauten, with some very rare songs, spoken word/performance by Blixa and Mosermeyer show, which was duo featuring Rudolf Moser.
Neubauten show was very intimate, and strong, even only 30 minutes long, it was alone worth visiting Tampere.
Blixa’s spoken word thingy was very funny, and noisy. Blixa created galaxy and typical 4/4 radio hit called “Cosmic baby” using his looping sampler pedal. Later I heard, that he has done both of these before, but this first time I heard them.
Wednesday evening ended with Mosermeyer playing some droney ambient stuff, with some neubauten style percussions. Me and my “date”(*) liked it a lot, but my friend that was driving with us, didn’t like it. We travelled back to Helsinki by night, as I had some work things, that I couldn’t skip, and my “date” must attend some school lessons.
So Thursday we travelled back to Tampere, this time we had another friend joining us. Some of us went to eat sushi at Maruseki, best sushi I have eaten so far. Neubauten played at Pakkahuone, which is, well, I didn’t like at all, especially while waiting about an hour alone, as at that time my friends were all over Tampere, and none of them was with me at Pakkahuone.
Anyway, Einstürzende neubauten played approximately 2,5 hours, and I thing that covered pretty much all the their three decades. It was very good show, and they even played some obscure noisy stuff. And again after the show, we travelled back to Helsinki.
Friday for me it was time to visit Altparty, which mainly demo party for alternative computers, meaning. I am that much into demo scene, but they always have some nice bands, and this year wasn’t exception.
First band I saw was Since November that is space themed side-project of someone from Magenta skycode and The Crash. Space theme didn’t help, and the band just didn’t work for me. I guess it was okeish indie-pop/rock/what-not. Just not my cup of tea.
Next was Muffler. Late nineties Muffler won pretty much all the demo scene music competitions, but then techno/drum’n'bass scene took him. His set was mainly Drum’n'bass. Pretty good, but not quite as good as Dj Hidden or B Complex, who are two favorite drum’n'bass artists, not that I know that scene too much.
After Muffler I got distracted and found myself drinking beer at Damicon Kraa (one of sponsors) office, and I almost missed Aavikko. Ok, we can say I missed it, as I only saw last two songs.
But those two songs very good, and I liked them. It has been something along the lines 12 or 13 years, I saw Aavikko last time. I should catch them again sometime soon.
But, my main reason to attend that evening, was Carbon based lifeforms. And oh, boy, they were good. And they played all my favorite songs. Around 1,5 hours long show. Veeery good.
Saturday there was more, but I was little tired and only went to see Digidroid, that is side project of Carbon based lifeforms. Basicly 8-bit sounding chiptunes. I liked it a lot. Unfortunately it was very short set, only around 30 – 35 minutes.
So there. Next in line is Maschinen Fest, this time at Oberhausen, same area but different city.

(*) not date as in someone I am dating, just a friend I did spend most of my time at Tampere on those Neubauten evening. She is someone I like very much, I am even tempted to use that curse word, but I can’t as there isn’t us, and she has a boyfriend.
After long silence…
October 24th, 2010…I am again working on some new music. Actually currently working on three(!) songs:
Bunnies and cats don’t mix is mixing elements of drum ‘n’ bass and trance, but as always, with little too much distortion.
I think I broke something is just heavily distorted drum ‘n’ bass. I think I am going to mix some 8-bit/chiptune sounds with this one.
And last but not least
Eye, yes, it is cover, my all time favorite from Smashing pumpkins. I haven’t yet recorded any of vocals, so I can’t really tell yet if I am ever going to release this one. It just wouldn’t work without vocals.
Schatten 10v. ja hautajaiset
October 11th, 2010At last I found my neck, took a good grip from it and went through all those around 300 photos from last Schatten club ever, in January 2010. While I haven’t really enjoyed the music they played at Schatten for last couple of years, it was still event I wanted to be. And I met many of old friends, that very rarely visit any clubs anymore. I hope that some of that was catch in my photos, which are located here:

WGT: http://www.undyinglands.org/gallery/main.php/v/hiljaisuus/musicrelated/wgt/2010/
Gothic Festival: http://www.undyinglands.org/gallery/main.php/v/hiljaisuus/musicrelated/gothicfestival2010/
Noissa molemmissa oli mukana vain pokkari, joten kuvien laatu on vähän sitä itseään, mutta on siellä muutama ihan ehkä jopa onnistunutkin kuva.
Syksyllä ohjelmassa:
24.9.2010 Epica Nosturissa. *olin paikalla*
20-21.10. Einstürzende neubauten Tampereella (2 keikkaa) *olin paikalla*
22-24.10. Altparty Helsingissä. mm. Aavikko & Digidroid & Carbon based lifeforms *olin paikalla*
1.11. Gotan project Kulttuuritalo, Helsinki. *lippu on, mutta tuskin menen…*
5-7.11.2010 Maschinen fest Oberhausen, Saksa. *pikku tauko ihan kaikesta, joka tulee tarpeeseen, aivan varmasti menen!*
12.11.2010 Graveyard party, Helsinki; sisältää Hanzel & Gretyl + muita *lippu on, mutta…*
25.11.2010 Marina and the diamonds Tavastialla. *lippu on..*
18.12.2010 Kalma Club, Dubrovnik, Helsinki *tuskin menen…*
Noihin on lippu hommattuna, paitsi tietty Kalmaan. Luulen, että vaivun talviunille jossain tossa Marina and the Diamondsin keikan jälkeen, ja tuskin missään käyn sen jälkeen toviin, tuota Kalmaa lukuunottamatta.
This year so far…
June 8th, 2010In January I went to Tampere and attended last Schatten Club. It was ok. I also went to afterparty, but since I didn’t real feel like partying, I left “early”, although late enough, that I couldn’t get my usually “night pizza”, as my pizzeria was closed. They close at around 5 am. I have some photos from the party and after party, but I have been slacking off, and I haven’t yet went through them, and select good ones for public photo gallery. I might do it some time soon…
And just little while later, in May, I went to Wave gotik treffen in Leipzig, Germany. I saw just a few bands, but some of them were bands that I really wanted to see. I didn’t miss anything too important. And I only went to after parties on one night. But, I will write proper entry about WGT in few days, with embedded photos even.
Scheduled next is: Wait, I don’t have anything scheduled. I have thought of going to Amphi festival, even this year there isn’t really any bands would really like to see. I would like to see that festival. I also thought of Mera luna, but I don’t know, maybe I have seen that festival already enough times.
I have sort of lost my interest on most of the music, at home I very rarely listening to anything any more. I only listen to music while in metro, tram, gym or while walking in or around town. I did bought around 10 CD’s from WGT, but I wonder why…
On the own music; I bought Logic Express 9, I liked it and bought upgrade from Logic Express to Logic Studio, and I like it even more, but I haven’t been able to get anything new together. Maybe some day.
